UN Language Proficiency Exam 2026 Dates and Scores

The United Nations English Language Proficiency Examination, or LPE, takes place on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. The published access window is 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. New York time.

French follows on October 14, Chinese and Spanish on October 21, and Arabic and Russian on October 28. All six exams are online.

UN LPE 2026 calendar

The dates follow the usual sequence described in the 2026 policies: English, French, Chinese and Spanish, then Arabic and Russian across the first four Wednesdays in October.

The calendar does not mean one candidate can open any language on any Wednesday. The convocation identifies the approved language and provides access instructions.

Chinese and Spanish share a day, as do Arabic and Russian. A candidate approved for two colliding languages should not assume the nine-hour window guarantees enough time or dual access; the LPE focal point should resolve the collision before exam day.

English LPE on October 7

The English exam is 40 days after this guide's August 28 update.

The LPE assesses UN Level III Advanced, not CEFR C1 or C2 by name. The United Nations Language Framework is the controlling standard.

English candidates are assessed on:

1. Listening.
2. Reading.
3. Written production and interaction.
4. Spoken production and interaction.

This is a workplace proficiency certificate inside the UN system. It is not an IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge booking route and does not use their score scales.

Online format and timing

Two hundred twenty minutes equals 3 hours 40 minutes. The UN preparation page says a practice exam takes about three to four hours, which is consistent with the published test timing.

The live session can take longer once identity, technical checks, instructions and permitted breaks are included. Candidates should not schedule another meeting immediately after 220 minutes.

All sections are completed in the United Nations Online Examinations and Tests System, or UNOETS. The public page describes the four sections as grouped into online quizzes and says a break is available between parts.

The convocation controls the exact sequence, break mechanism, login process and technical requirements.

Section gates and the 65-point total

The LPE uses both section minimums and an overall minimum.

Worked examples show the difference:

A 65 total is therefore necessary but not sufficient. Every section also needs 15.

The marking sequence is eliminatory:

• Listening below 15 stops writing and speaking from being evaluated.
• Reading below 15 stops writing and speaking from being evaluated.
• Writing below 15 stops speaking from being evaluated.
• Speaking still needs 15, and the four scores still need to total 65.

This design means later production work may be submitted but never scored when an earlier gate is missed.

Spoken production without a live interviewer

The old oral interview was replaced by online spoken production and interaction. No live interviewer participates in the current speaking section.

That does not make speaking optional. It remains a 25-point section with its own 15-point minimum.

The published 30-minute block assesses spoken production and interaction at UN Level III Advanced. Candidates should use the official practice environment to understand recording, prompt and response mechanics rather than importing a commercial exam's speaking format.

General speaking practice can still support clarity and sustained workplace responses. Useful resources include English conversation topics for adults, professional interview role plays, office small talk in English, and ways to practise speaking alone.

Who can take the UN LPE

The LPE is intended for United Nations Secretariat staff and eligible people from participating UN common-system entities. It is not open to anyone who wants to buy an English certificate.

The 2026 process distinguishes:

Possible non-financial routes include completing a qualifying highest-level UN course, documented outside language study, or verified regular language use for work or study, subject to the official criteria and supporting forms.

An appointment normally needs to extend beyond the exam date. Where it expires earlier, the process may require a letter expressing intent to extend the contract.

For non-Secretariat applicants, financial endorsement is handled by the parent organization. The policies say an application is automatically rejected when required endorsement is not confirmed by the deadline.

The list of participating entities includes organizations such as FAO, IAEA, ICAO, ILO, IMO, IOM, UNDP, UNESCO, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNOPS, WFP, WHO, WIPO and others, while the Secretariat is the non-fee-paying entity. Participation must be checked for the current year.

Registration is closed and convocations are out

The current page states that the 2026 review process has finished and all convoked candidates have been notified by email.

That means:

• A new candidate cannot use the October dates as an open registration window.
• A submitted application is not enough without a convocation.
• Approved candidates should monitor the email address used in the process.
• Questions should go to the named LPE contact or local focal point.

Convoked candidates should confirm the language, date, access window and technical preparation in their message.

The policies say only eligible candidates from endorsed participating entities are convoked. A missing invitation can therefore reflect screening, financial endorsement or communication issues, not merely a delayed public timetable.

New York time and same-day language collisions

The published window uses New York time. On October 7, New York is on Eastern Daylight Time, UTC minus four, unless an official instruction states otherwise.

Candidates should verify the exact local start and close, then leave time for the full 220 minutes plus administration.

Those approved for Chinese and Spanish, or Arabic and Russian, face same-day schedules. They should ask the LPE administrator how access is sequenced rather than assume simultaneous exam systems can be self-arranged.
