US Foreign Service Officer Test Dates 2026

The next Foreign Service Officer Test, or FSOT, runs from October 10 through October 17, 2026. Registration opens September 10 and closes October 8.

This is the revised test introduced in October 2025. It has Job Knowledge, English Usage and Comprehension, and Logical Reasoning. The old Situational Judgment section and written essay are no longer part of the FSOT.

The Department of State also removed the old fixed passing-score concept. Candidates advance competitively based on scores and Foreign Service needs. Official FSOT dates for the rest of 2026

The October application window opens in 13 days. It remains open for about four weeks, and the published close is two days before testing begins.

The Department of State says the FSOT is administered quarterly in 2026 and registration opens about one month before an exam. Pearson VUE's current schedule displays July and October, not a complete archive of all earlier 2026 windows.

This guide therefore does not invent January or spring dates from the word "quarterly." For a candidate acting now, October 10 to 17 is the verified next window.

Dates are subject to change. The selected Pearson appointment, time zone and confirmation email control the actual session.

Registration and seat selection

Candidates complete the application and select a seat during the same registration period. A general Pearson account can exist before September 10, but the October application cannot be submitted before the window opens.

The current sequence is:

1. Create or access a Pearson VUE FSOT account.
2. Confirm statutory eligibility.
3. Select one of the five Foreign Service Officer career tracks.
4. Complete the application for the October window.
5. Submit the application before October 8.
6. Select an available test appointment.
7. Save the confirmation and test-day instructions.

An application is valid only for its specified test window. Once submitted, it cannot be changed for that window.

The Department of State encourages a personal email address with long-term access. Current U.S. government employees may not use a government email address for the application, testing and assessment process.

A candidate who needs accommodation must request and receive approval before scheduling. Waiting until the final registration day can leave too little time for that approval or for a suitable seat.

The application no longer requires the personal narrative essays that appeared in older process guides. Candidates should not follow a cached checklist that still makes six narratives a mandatory 2026 step.

Revised FSOT format in 2026

The official online practice FSOT simulates the length and questions of the revised test. It tells candidates the allotted time for each section, but the practice interface does not provide an automatic timer.

The current public instruction page does not state a universal question count and timer for each revised section in its explanatory text. Older PDFs that specify the former English Expression, Situational Judgment or essay timing describe a retired format.

The safest format source is the current practice test linked by the Department of State, followed by the instructions shown in the live Pearson appointment.

English Usage and Comprehension

The current English section combines language usage with reading comprehension. That is a broader task than the former English Expression label suggests.

The section can assess whether a candidate can:

• Recognize standard written English.
• Select grammatically and contextually appropriate wording.
• Understand the purpose and meaning of a passage.
• Draw supported conclusions from written material.
• Distinguish a precise statement from a vague or unsupported one.

The Department of State says English questions were brought more closely into line with job requirements. The practice page does not publish a separate spoken-English interview inside the FSOT.

English speaking becomes relevant elsewhere in a diplomatic career and later assessment activity, but it should not be invented as a fourth FSOT section. For general communication, use English speaking and writing skills, vocabulary for speaking, professional interview role plays, and adult conversation topics.

Candidates comparing unrelated U.S. language routes should keep IELTS dates in the United States, OET Medicine dates in the United States, and English requirements for U.S. nurses separate. None substitutes for the FSOT.

What the revised test removed

Three obsolete claims still appear in older official and third-party material.

The old essay asked candidates to choose a position, organize an argument and write under a short timer. That historical task should not be used to describe the October 2026 FSOT.

Removing the essay does not remove writing from the complete Foreign Service selection process. The later Foreign Service Officer Assessment includes a written case-management exercise for invited candidates.

Removing Situational Judgment from the FSOT also does not mean judgment disappears from selection. The later structured interview and other assessment exercises still evaluate behavior, analysis and decision making.

Why there is no fixed passing score

The Department of State's current practice instructions state that the FSOT no longer has a passing score. Candidates are selected to continue based on the highest scores and the needs of the Foreign Service.

That changes how a result should be interpreted:

• One historical cutoff is not a current guarantee.
• A strong score can still be insufficient in a competitive cohort.
• A score must be considered alongside the career track and hiring needs.
• Passing the FSOT stage would not guarantee an eventual appointment.

The old idea of treating a published number as a permanent pass line is therefore misleading. The practical target is the strongest accurate performance possible on all three current sections.

The Department does not publish a formula showing how many October candidates will be invited. It also does not promise equal invitation numbers across all five career tracks.

Test centres, overseas sites and OnVUE

Pearson VUE offers several delivery routes:

For OnVUE, Pearson asks candidates to begin check-in 30 minutes before the appointment. The Begin Exam button remains available until 15 minutes after the scheduled time; starting later can be treated as a no-show.

The online exam is closed book. The room and workstation must be clear of notes, reference material, calculators, watches, tablets, food and other prohibited items. A phone is used during check-in for identity and room images, then placed out of reach.

Pearson recommends running the required system test on the same computer, in the same location and around the same time as the real appointment. Corporate, university and military firewalls can interfere with the online route.

Candidates should follow the cancellation and rescheduling rule displayed for their delivery mode. The OnVUE page permits changes up to the scheduled appointment time, but that should not be generalized to every test-centre booking without checking the confirmation.

Eligibility and the 12-month rule

The current Pearson page gives four core requirements:

• U.S. citizenship when the registration package is submitted.
• Age 20 through 59 on the application date.
• At least 21 and not yet 60 on the appointment date.
• Willingness to accept assignments according to service needs.

No specific university degree is required. Foreign-language proficiency is also not a prerequisite for submitting an FSO application.

A candidate may take the FSOT only once in a 12-month period. This current wording matters because older State Department material says 11 months.

The five career tracks are Consular, Economic, Management, Political and Public Diplomacy. The selected track shapes the candidacy and eventual register, so it is not just a test-centre preference.

Candidates looking at other government English processes should not transfer their rules. The German Foreign Office English assessment, Austrian Foreign Ministry language tests, and Canada federal SLE use different citizenship, language and scheduling systems.

What happens after the FSOT

The FSOT is the first competitive selection stage, not a job offer.

Candidates selected to continue may enter the Foreign Service Officer Assessment. Current State Department material describes a virtual assessment process with written and oral exercises, followed by medical clearance, security investigation, suitability review and placement on a rank-order register.

The later path can include:

1. Case Management Exercise.
2. Group Exercise.
3. Structured Interview.
4. Medical and security clearances.
5. Suitability review.
6. Career-track register and possible offer according to hiring need.

The register is competitive. Completing every assessment and clearance does not create an automatic appointment if the candidate is not reached before candidacy expires.

Reading comprehension was added to the renamed English section, Logical Reasoning replaced Situational Judgment, and the written essay was removed. The current official practice test reflects the version introduced in October 2025.

No fixed passing score is published for the revised FSOT. The State Department says candidates move forward based on the highest scores and the needs of the Foreign Service. A test result therefore remains competitive rather than a guarantee that crossing one historical number will produce an assessment invitation.

Pearson VUE offers OnVUE online proctoring as well as domestic, overseas and eligible military-base testing locations. Candidates testing at an overseas Pearson site must use a United States passport for identity verification. Appointment options depend on the testing window and available seats shown after registration.

Pearson VUE's current rule says a candidate may test only once in a 12-month period. That wording supersedes older guides that mention an 11-month interval. Candidates must also be United States citizens, meet the age rules and accept assignments based on Foreign Service needs.
