Is the Versant test mandatory in Deloitte for experienced hires?

This is the question people actually type, so here is the full answer rather than a comfortable one.

Deloitte does not publish employer-specific Versant requirements. We opened Deloitte's official US-India recruiting pages this week. The recruitment process page describes profile creation, job-specific submission, review by recruiting professionals and hiring managers, then interview scheduling. It names no English test, no Versant, no Pearson. The experienced professionals page says nothing about assessments at all. That absence is not evidence the test doesn't happen : large firms rarely publish screening tools : but it does mean any article stating "Deloitte requires Versant 60 for experienced hires" is inventing a number.

What candidates report, and how much to trust it:

• It is common enough to prepare for. Public threads on Glassdoor's Deloitte USI community and Fishbowl exist precisely because so many candidates encounter it : the recurring question "is versant test mandatory in deloitte" is itself the signal. Candidate-reported.
• It skews toward client-facing and voice-facing roles. Reports cluster around roles with direct US stakeholder contact. Roles that are purely back-end engineering are reported less often. Candidate-reported.
• Experienced hires are not automatically exempt. Multiple candidate accounts describe experienced professionals : not just campus freshers : sitting the same voice assessment. Others report going through several interview rounds without one. Candidate-reported, and genuinely mixed.
• Third-party prep sites disagree with each other. PrepInsta publishes a detailed Deloitte Versant breakdown and a note on the same page saying that in the current Deloitte test pattern the Versant test "is not conducted anymore." Unstop's recruitment guide still describes a phone-based communication round as Round 2, covering "reading comprehension, jumbled sentences, usage of words, story-retelling" : which is unmistakably the Versant task list. Both are third-party sites, and they cannot both be current.

So what should you do? Two things. First, ask your recruiter directly : "does this role include a communication or Versant assessment, and at which stage?" is a completely normal question and the only authoritative answer available. Second, prepare anyway. Every skill Versant measures is a skill you will use in the interview itself and on your first client call, so the preparation is never wasted even if the test never appears.

What the current Versant test actually is

Deloitte does not publicly identify one Pearson product for every USI role. Use this section only when the invitation names Versant by Pearson English Speaking and Listening. Pearson's current test catalogue labels the older English Speaking Test as retiring soon and points employers toward the newer Speaking and Listening product.

Pearson's current English Speaking and Listening official guide describes a 17-minute test with 40 items:

The test reports Overall Ability, Speaking, Listening, and Manner of Speaking. Pearson says it can run in a supported browser or the Versant app using a Test Identification Number. An employer can also require remote monitoring.

The older 63-item English Speaking Test still appears in search results and old preparation articles. Its sections include Reading, Repeat, Short Answer Questions, Sentence Builds, Story Retellings, and Open Questions. Do not assume those tasks match a new invitation merely because both products take about 17 minutes.

Three practical rules follow:

• Match the exact product name and sample link in the invitation.
• Practise both listening comprehension and spoken delivery for the current product.
• Ask the recruiter when the invitation says only "communication assessment" without naming a vendor.

How Versant scoring works and what a passing score means

Pearson's current Speaking and Listening guide reports four results: Overall Ability, Speaking, Listening, and Manner of Speaking. The report uses the Global Scale of English from 10 to 90 and provides a CEFR level.

Older forum posts may quote a score out of 80 from the retiring English Speaking Test. Do not compare that number directly with a current GSE result. First identify the product and scale printed on the score report.

Deloitte does not publish a universal passing score for USI roles. Pearson supplies the assessment and report; the employer decides how a result is used for a particular vacancy. A preparation site's cutoff is not a Deloitte rule unless the invitation or recruiter confirms it.

Versant test Deloitte practice: a 3-week plan

Use this plan only after confirming that the invitation names the current Speaking and Listening Test. Its 40 items assess both comprehension and delivery, so a pronunciation-only routine is incomplete.

Week 1: short answers and sentence repetition. Answer simple factual questions in a word or short phrase. For repeats, copy the sentence's words, stress, rhythm, and pauses without adding an explanation. Record ten attempts a day and review omissions separately from pronunciation.

Week 2: conversations and passages. Listen to short workplace exchanges and brief news or podcast segments. Answer who, what, why, and outcome questions aloud within 15 seconds. The goal is to understand once and respond promptly, not to replay audio until it becomes familiar.

Week 3: passage retells and opinions. Retell a short passage in 30 seconds using its main actors, event, and result. Give a 40-second opinion with a position, one reason, and one example. Mix all six task types into 17-minute runs and complete the official equipment check.

If nerves are the larger problem, use overcoming the fear of speaking English and phone-call English practice. Voice-only practice is useful because visual cues cannot rescue a missed question.

Test-day setup that quietly costs candidates points

The most preventable failure mode is not language. It's audio. Pearson's own requirements are unambiguous : you need a headset with a microphone boom and a quiet room where you can work without interruptions throughout the test, and Pearson's test-taker preparation page leads with exactly that.

• Boom mic, not laptop mic. A boom sits at a fixed distance from your mouth. Laptop mics pick up your keyboard, your fan and the road.
• Silence the room properly. Pearson warns that "even loud fans and air conditioning can cause interference." In an Indian summer that is a real trade-off : do the test in a cooler hour rather than with the AC running.
• Run the system check seriously. Both guides describe a pre-test audio and microphone check. It is your only chance to catch a dead mic.
• Have your Test Identification Number ready, plus a stable connection : Pearson's store lists 32 KB/sec download as the recommended minimum and modern Firefox, Chrome or Edge.
• Expect possible remote proctoring. Both guides note your administrator may require a remotely monitored session, with advance notice.

Tier 1, official: Pearson's current test catalogue, English Speaking and Listening guide, and test-taker preparation page supply the product status, item count, timing, response windows, score categories, and setup. The older English Speaking Test is included only to explain why 63-item descriptions still appear in search results.

Tier 2 : official by absence: Deloitte's US-India recruitment process and experienced professionals pages, read in full. Neither names Versant, Pearson or any English assessment. We report that as "not published," not as "not required."

Tier 3 : candidate-reported, labelled as such: public discussion threads on Glassdoor's Deloitte USI community, Fishbowl and Quora, plus prep-site claims from PrepInsta and Unstop. We cite these for patterns : that the test is common, that it appears early, that cutoffs are rumoured : never as fact.
