The vacancy cycle is described as 2027-28 even though the examinations occur in 2026. The recruitment-process name, PO/MT-XVI, is the safest identifier.

For other hiring assessments, see TCS and Cognizant communication tests, iMocha AI-EnglishPro, and call-centre English assessment. They are not substitutes for IBPS CRP eligibility.

Preliminary English pattern

The preliminary examination is one hour with three separately timed tests.

Preliminary test Questions Marks Time Medium
English Language 30 30 20 minutes English
Quantitative Aptitude 35 30 20 minutes English and Hindi
Reasoning Ability 35 40 20 minutes English and Hindi
Total 100 100 60 minutes Mixed

Candidates must obtain the minimum cut-off decided by IBPS in each test. A high total does not repair a failed sectional cut-off.

The English part is one mark per question. Under the one-quarter penalty rule, one wrong preliminary English answer costs 0.25 mark.

The prelim is a screening stage. Its marks do not enter final merit.

The SSC CGL English guide and SSC Stenographer English guide show why generic "government English exam" advice is too broad. IBPS uses different timers, weights and selection rules.

Main English and descriptive pattern

The online main examination includes objective and descriptive components.

Main test Questions Marks Time Medium
Reasoning 40 60 45 minutes English and Hindi
General, Economy, Banking, Digital and Financial Awareness, including RBI circulars 50 60 35 minutes English and Hindi
English Language 40 20 35 minutes English
Data Analysis and Interpretation 40 60 45 minutes English and Hindi
Objective total 170 200 160 minutes Mixed
Descriptive Essay and Comprehension 2 tasks 25 30 minutes English

Main English has a different value shape from prelims. Forty questions share 20 marks, so each objective English item carries an average assigned value of 0.50 mark.

The descriptive paper may draw broadly from:

  • Economic and social issues.
  • Emerging banking and technology trends.
  • Current events.
  • Ethics.

IBPS says the descriptive paper may be evaluated by a validated automated scoring mechanism that identifies writing-proficiency features.

This is not a speaking assessment. Candidates type an essay and comprehension response in English.

For general writing and oral control, read improve English speaking and writing, English conversation topics, and office small talk. IBPS information handouts remain the exam source.

Negative marking is proportional

IBPS deducts one quarter of the marks assigned to an objective question when the answer is wrong.

Example Assigned question value Wrong-answer deduction
Prelim English 1 mark 0.25 mark
Main English, average assigned value 0.50 mark 0.125 mark
Unanswered question Any 0

The rule is not a universal flat 0.25 mark across every section. It is 25% of that question's assigned value.

The descriptive paper is not governed by objective negative marking. It is scored as writing performance.

A practical sequence is:

  1. Protect each sectional timer.
  2. Answer high-confidence language items first.
  3. Avoid random attempts when no option can be eliminated.
  4. Reserve the full descriptive window for both tasks.
  5. Review only within the active test timer.

Personality test and interview

Candidates who qualify in the main examination are called for a mandatory Personality Test before interview.

The Personality Test is:

  • Self-report based.
  • Non-qualifying.
  • Mandatory for interview eligibility.
  • Potentially remote-proctored or held at identified centres.

The resulting personality profile is placed before the interview panel.

The common interview is coordinated by the nodal bank with IBPS support. It carries 100 marks.

Interview rule Published value
General minimum At least 40%
SC, ST, OBC and PwBD minimum At least 35%
Main exam to interview final weight 80:20

IBPS assigns the interview centre, date and time through the call letter. Requests to change them are not ordinarily entertained.

What counts in final merit

Preliminary marks do not count toward final merit. IBPS states in capital letters that main-exam marks only are used for personality-test and interview shortlisting and final merit listing before interview weight is added.

The sequence is:

  1. Clear all preliminary sectional cut-offs.
  2. Reach the main-exam sectional and total cut-offs.
  3. Attend the mandatory Personality Test.
  4. Qualify the interview.
  5. Receive a combined score using 80% main and 20% interview weight.
  6. Rank sufficiently high for provisional allotment.

The Personality Test is mandatory but non-qualifying. It does not add a published separate score to the 80:20 formula.

The final allotment also depends on actual participating-bank vacancies, reservation rules and preferences.

How to check result and main call letter

Use only the official process:

  1. Open the IBPS PO/MT-XVI page.
  2. Check dated notices above the July 1 notification.
  3. Open the preliminary-result link when published.
  4. Download the main call letter through the official registration portal.
  5. Verify the October 4 date, reporting time and centre.
  6. Carry the valid main call letter and authenticated preliminary call-letter material required by the notification.
  7. Monitor the same page for the November result and personality-test notice.

The preliminary question-observation portal was open only August 25 to 27 and only for candidates who appeared. It is not the result page.

The questions before booking an English test applies the same source principle: do not confuse registration, observation, call-letter and result portals.

How we researched this guide

On August 28, 2026, we opened the official IBPS PO/MT-XVI page through the existing browser profile and downloaded the July 1 detailed notification, January 16 CRP calendar and August 27 vacancy corrigendum.

The calendar supplied exact August 22 and 23 prelim dates and October 4 main date. The candidate observation portal confirmed prelims had occurred. The detailed notification supplied English structure, descriptive topics, selection weights and tentative post-exam timeline.

We parsed the latest vacancy annexure and calculated the published total of 7,565, preserving Union Bank of India as not reported.

We did not use coaching dates, copy protected questions, invent cut-offs or use SpeakShark customer data.

IBPS tentatively places the prelim result and main call letter in September, main result and personality test in November, interviews in November-December, and provisional allotment in January 2027.
How many English questions are in the IBPS PO preliminary exam?
The preliminary English Language test has 30 questions worth 30 marks and a separate 20-minute timer. Quantitative Aptitude has 35 questions for 30 marks and Reasoning Ability has 35 questions for 40 marks. Candidates must clear the cut-off set by IBPS in each of the three preliminary tests.
How much English is in the IBPS PO main exam?

Is there negative marking in IBPS PO 2026?
Yes. For each wrong objective answer, IBPS deducts one quarter of the marks assigned to that question. An unanswered question has no penalty. This proportional rule applies to both preliminary and main objective tests; the deduction is not a flat 0.25 mark when a question is worth less or more than one mark.
Do preliminary marks count in the final IBPS PO merit list?
No. The preliminary exam is a screening stage. IBPS states that main-exam marks alone are used for shortlisting candidates for the mandatory personality test and interview and for final merit. The final combined score uses an 80:20 ratio between the online main examination and the interview.
