SSC CGL 2026 Tier I is still officially listed only for August-September 2026. As of August 28, the Staff Selection Commission had not published exact Tier I dates on its notice board. Tier II remains tentatively scheduled for December 2026.

The January SSC calendar created an important source of confusion by showing May-June. The later examination-specific notice, published May 21, moved Tier I to August-September. Candidates should use the newer notice and wait for an approved date notice rather than copying a coaching-site calendar.

SSC CGL 2026 date status

The examination-specific notice contains the current official schedule layer.

SSC states that the schedule is tentative and changes will be communicated only through its website.

We checked the SSC notice board through August 25, the latest update visible during the August 28 audit. New schedule notices covered Combined Hindi Translators, Stenographer and Selection Post Phase XIV, but none assigned exact dates to CGL Tier I.

That absence matters because search results can turn a tentative month into an invented date range. A candidate should not book non-refundable travel until SSC issues the exam city, admission certificate and approved schedule information.

Why May-June dates are outdated

SSC published two official schedule layers at different times:

The later notice is both newer and specific to CGL 2026. Its August-September window should therefore be used until SSC publishes another update.

The notice itself says all schedule information is tentative. The correct answer is not to replace one estimate with another. It is to state the latest official window and mark the exact dates as pending.

The Press Information Bureau confirms that SSC published the CGL notification on May 21 for approximately 12,256 Group B and Group C vacancies across Indian government ministries, departments and organisations.

Application and correction dates

The ordinary application process has ended.

One-Time Registration with SSC was a prerequisite before applying. A candidate who did not submit during the window cannot use the coming exam-date notice as a new application period unless SSC explicitly reopens applications.

The application form also collected examination-centre preferences. SSC decides the final assignment based on the notice and capacity rules.

Tier I English pattern

Tier I is a computer-based multiple-choice examination with four subjects.

English represents one quarter of Tier I questions and marks. The 15-minute sectional timer means unused time cannot simply be carried from another subject after that section closes.

Questions are set in English and Hindi except for English Comprehension. The English section therefore requires direct reading rather than relying on a Hindi version.

Each wrong Tier I answer loses 0.50 mark. One correct English answer adds two marks, while four incorrect guesses remove two marks.

Tier I is used for shortlisting. If SSC conducts multiple shifts, it applies the published normalisation process before determining cutoffs.

Tier II English pattern

Tier II Paper I is compulsory for all posts. Its first session contains three timed sections, followed by a separate Data Entry Speed Test session.

English is the largest individual objective subject in Paper I by question count and marks. It carries 45 questions and 135 marks.

The English timer is 40 minutes. General Awareness starts after that period inside Section II. The entire Section II closes after one hour.

Candidates must qualify Paper I sections separately. The exact qualifying standards and final cutoffs are determined under the notice and result process, not by coaching estimates.

The notice describes Tier II English as 10+2 level. Mathematical Abilities is matriculation level, while the optional Statistics and Finance papers are graduation level.

The syllabus rewards controlled reading and written accuracy. It does not measure spoken fluency, pronunciation or interview interaction.

Negative marking and attempt strategy

Tier II English gives three marks for a correct answer and removes one for a wrong answer. The expected value of a guess depends on how many options can be eliminated, not only on remaining time.

A practical English decision sequence is:

1. Answer direct grammar and vocabulary items first.
2. Mark uncertain questions only if the interface allows review within the section.
3. Reserve time for cloze and comprehension.
4. Avoid random final-second guesses merely to increase attempts.
5. Watch the sectional timer because it closes automatically.

The official syllabus should define coverage. A coaching mock can simulate timing but cannot add an official topic or change the penalty.

Posts and examination scope

SSC CGL recruits graduate-level candidates for Group B and Group C roles across the Government of India. The notification covers different ministries, departments and organisations.

Paper I is compulsory for all posts. Additional Tier II papers apply only to shortlisted candidates for named statistical, audit or accounts roles.

4. Open the PDF attachment and verify its date.
5. Check the applicant login for city and admission-certificate information.
6. Compare the notice number and exam year before acting.
