Every sitting used must be within three years when the registration application is made.

Which test formats count

The policy guidance says fully online tests are not accepted. Applicants should choose a delivery format that the Council recognises rather than assuming all products carrying the IELTS or OET name are interchangeable.

The Council's guidance allows the OET speaking component associated with the venue-based computer delivery option, while rejecting a wholly remote test route. Because test providers can rename or change delivery products, confirm the exact format on the current NCNZ page before booking.

When an applicant may use an alternative pathway

It is important to describe this as an evidence pathway, not an automatic exemption. NCNZ decides whether the applicant's history satisfies the policy and can request further material.

The current page identifies specified countries for relevant nursing education and a specified set for registration history. The lists are not identical. Applicants should read the pathway matching their facts and should not add a country because English is widely used there.

Evidence may involve:

The country and institution where initial nursing education was completed.
The language of instruction and assessment.
Registration with the named overseas regulator.
Nursing practice history connected to that registration.
Documents requested through the NCNZ application assessment.

A generic medium-of-instruction letter is not a self-executing waiver. It may form part of requested evidence, but only the Council can decide the route.

This is also different from admission to a New Zealand nursing programme. The Nursing Council's education page says the Council itself does not set one English entry requirement for nursing programmes; education providers determine admission evidence. A student can therefore encounter a provider rule before later encountering a professional registration rule.

Registration and immigration are separate gates
