NMC English Requirements for Overseas Nurses in 2026

Most guides to NMC English requirements explain how to pass IELTS or OET. That is useful for the people who need a test, but it skips the first question worth asking.

The NMC accepts three types of evidence, and says it will accept one of these types without needing further evidence. Two of the three are not tests. Nurses spend money on exams every year without checking whether they were ever required to sit one.

The three types of evidence

The NMC's framing is worth quoting, because it is more generous than most summaries suggest:

There are three types of evidence that will satisfy us that you have the necessary knowledge of English to practise in the UK. We will accept one of these types without needing further evidence.

There is also a fourth possibility that is not a standalone route. The NMC notes that some applicants may be eligible to provide supporting information from a current UK employer, and that whether you can use this depends on your circumstances and on meeting certain requirements.

The two routes that need no test

Qualified in English. The condition is that your pre-registration qualification was taught and examined in English. Both words carry weight. A programme delivered in English but examined in another language is a different situation from one where both were in English, and the NMC's wording asks for both.

Recent practice in English. The condition is one year of recent practice as a nurse, midwife or nursing associate in a country where English is the majority-spoken language. That last phrase is the scope condition, and it is doing real work. It is not a list of countries where English is an official language, and it is not about whether your workplace used English.

Neither route removes the need to communicate in English on the ward. They remove the need to buy a certificate proving it. If you qualify for either, the money and the months you were about to spend on an exam are yours to keep.

If you do not qualify, nothing is lost by having checked. If you do, you have avoided an expense that a large number of internationally educated nurses pay without needing to.

The scores, if you do need a test

Two tests are accepted, and only two. We cover the exclusions in detail in is PTE accepted by the NMC, which is the short answer to the most common version of that question.

Both are stated domain by domain. There is no overall band or overall grade that rescues a weak domain, which is why so many applications stall three quarters of the way through. Our full breakdown of the NMC IELTS scores goes through each number and the combining maths.

One trap belongs to OET specifically. The NMC says all applicants should choose the Nursing examination from the list of OET Professions versions. OET sells profession-specific papers, so a nurse who books a different profession's version ends up with a real certificate that cannot be used. The booking page offers the choice; only one option is right for this purpose.

The remote sitting asymmetry

This is the finding most guides miss, and it matters if you are choosing between the two tests.

OET@Home is accepted. The NMC accepts OET on Paper, OET on Computer and OET@Home, and says these include the same tasks, difficulty, format and timings and are marked by the same assessment criteria. It even allows OET@Home to be combined with OET on Paper or OET on Computer.

IELTS Online is not accepted, and neither is IELTS Indicator. On Indicator the NMC's stated reason is that the security measures are not comparable to those for the face-to-face test.

So the same regulator reaches opposite conclusions about two at-home products. The lesson is not that remote sittings are fine or that they are banned. It is that the answer is per test and per regulator, and the only reliable move is to read the page for the exact product you are about to book.

The same pattern appears elsewhere. Australia's visa pages reject several online versions by name, and Canada names a specific version of each accepted test.

Combining two sittings

If you miss one domain, both tests allow a combination across two sittings, and both rules have the same two part shape.

On IELTS Academic, across the two sittings you need one reading of at least 7, one listening of at least 7, one speaking of at least 7 and one writing of at least 6.5. Every score in both sittings must also sit at or above a floor of 6.5 listening, 6.5 reading, 6.5 speaking and 6 writing.

On OET, across the two sittings you need one reading, one listening and one speaking at grade B (350 to 440) and one writing at C+ (300 to 340). Every score in both sittings must also sit at or above a floor of C+ (300 to 340) for listening, reading and speaking, and C (250 to 290) for writing.

The general conditions sit on top of both: same test type, sittings within 12 months of each other, and both no more than two years old when the NMC assesses your complete application. The NMC counts from your test date, not your certificate date.

What to actually practise

If your route is a test, speaking is the domain that only improves by speaking.

Speak daily, unscripted. Both tests measure retrieval under pressure. Free methods to raise fluency and a 30 day plan to improve speaking cover the habit.
Pick the test that matches your working life. OET is written around clinical tasks; IELTS Academic is not. Speaking practice for nurses covers the vocabulary either way.
Do not treat writing as the easy one because its required score is lower. It is the domain most candidates neglect and then fail.

We could not find a published definition of majority-spoken language on the page we read. That phrase carries the whole practice route, so confirm how the NMC applies it to your country before relying on it.
