Official timetable

The table is a September 1 snapshot of the Dental Council examinations timetable. A published date proves that the Council planned the window. It does not prove personal eligibility, available capacity or a final campus assignment.

Which exam applies

The similar acronyms describe different scopes.

NZDHREX

The New Zealand Dental Hygiene Registration Examination is for the dental hygiene scope. Its 2026 written sitting has passed. The next clinical row uses the January 2027 window above.

NZDTREX

The New Zealand Dental Therapy Registration Examination follows its own written and clinical route. It shares the January clinical period but remains a separate examination and eligibility file.

NZOHTREX

The New Zealand Oral Health Therapy Registration Examination had a two-day written examination in June 2026. Its clinical period is also January 18 to 22, 2027.

NZDREX

Dentists should not use the three clinical rows above as their NZDREX calendar. The Council says NZDREX candidates must pass the National Dental Examining Board of Canada equivalency process. That process includes Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge, Assessment of Clinical Judgement and Assessment of Clinical Skills.

A shared word such as "dental" is not enough to choose a route. Match the professional scope, qualification and Council pathway before paying or ordering time-sensitive documents.

What the application window means

September 28 is the opening date for clinical eligibility applications. November 27 is the date by which the application must reach the Council under the timetable wording.

Use the window this way:

1. Read the current examination policy and form before opening day.
2. Identify every qualification and registration document required.
3. Confirm English evidence and validity.
4. Submit early enough to correct an incomplete item.
5. Keep payment and delivery evidence outside the portal.
6. Wait for the formal eligibility and candidate instructions.

The safest target is not November 27. It is a complete application with enough time for one correction cycle. Certified copies, score verification, official translations and good-standing evidence can take longer than expected.

Do not order every document on the same day. Some records have short validity windows. Work backward from the Council's requirements so a certificate does not expire while another institution is still producing a transcript.

English language evidence

The Dental Council's English language page publishes four broad evidence routes:

1. A programme accredited by the Dental Council or approved by the Dental Board of Australia.
2. First-language English plus dental training in Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland or Canada under the stated conditions.
3. At least two qualifying recent years of practice in English in one of those countries, with two practitioner attestations.
4. An approved IELTS Academic or OET result.

A test pass is valid for two years under the live page. The May 2026 update removed an older overall IELTS 7.5 condition for the scopes that still require 7 in each component. An old article that retains 7.5 is no longer describing the current rule.

Use IELTS level explanations, OET grade comparisons, how to practise IELTS Speaking, and general healthcare speaking practice for background. Only the Council decides registration evidence.

A safer application order

1. Choose the professional scope and registration pathway.
2. Determine whether the qualification is prescribed, examinable or individually assessed.
3. Determine the English evidence route before booking a test.
4. Collect slow institutional records.
5. Order short-lived evidence at the correct point.
6. Submit the clinical eligibility file after September 28.
7. Respond to any completeness request before the November 27 close.
8. Wait for the final venue and candidate instructions.

Passing an examination is not the same as holding current authority to practise. Registration, the annual practising certificate, employment and immigration remain separate decisions.

Patient communication after the score

Clinical eligibility tests professional competence. Spoken English practice should not imitate protected stations or invent clinical advice. It can build the communication layer used around correct professional knowledge.

• explaining options, risk and consent in plain language;
• checking understanding with teach-back;
