The most important word on iTEP's free test page is not free. It is unofficial.

iTEP offers a free Preview Test with an instant result, but the page labels both the test and its result unofficial. On the same site, one Academic practice form costs $15, Practice Plus costs $30, the prep course costs $45, and the actual Academic Plus exam is a separate $141 purchase at the price we read.

The free test is unofficial

The free tests page from iTEP presents two no-cost options: a Social English test and a Preview Test. It says the tests are quick, use a user-friendly platform, give instant unofficial results, and keep those results private.

Then it labels each option in capital letters: FREE & UNOFFICIAL.

That is unusually clear language. It answers the question that a search result page often obscures. A free iTEP preview is not a free attempt at the credential. It is a way to encounter the test environment and receive an immediate informal signal.

This does not make it useless. A free preview can tell you whether the interface feels unfamiliar, whether the task flow surprises you, and whether you freeze when a response begins. But it cannot do the job of a result that a university receives or verifies.

Free material can be authentic practice and still not be an admissible score.

The five options compared

The iTEP site currently places five different purchases or activities close together. They do not buy the same outcome.

The arithmetic matters. Buying all three Basic forms as a combo saves $9 against buying three separate $15 forms. Practice Plus costs twice one Basic form but $6 less than the Basic combo. The course costs $15 more than Practice Plus and says it includes practice tests within more than 30 hours of instruction.

None of those comparisons makes one option automatically better. They expose what you are paying for: another form, faster automated feedback, structured teaching, or the actual verified exam process.

This is the same decision discipline we recommend before spending on IELTS books or starting IELTS preparation from zero. First identify the constraint. More material does not repair the wrong constraint.

What each paid product actually adds

The Academic Basic Practice Test product page describes three core skills plus two self-graded linguistic tasks. It offers Forms A, B and C, plus a combo package. The wording matters because this is not described in exactly the same way as the main five-skill exam.

The Basic test may suit someone who wants multiple exposures to the format and is comfortable judging two tasks without an immediate external score. Three forms allow repetition without using exactly the same questions. The page also states that practice test purchases are nonrefundable.

The Academic Practice Plus page says it evaluates reading, listening, grammar, writing and speaking. Its particular addition is immediate AI scoring for writing and speaking, plus a score summary aligned with iTEP results. It offers one version, not the three Basic forms.

That gives Practice Plus a different use. If your uncertainty is not the interface but how a produced response might be evaluated, immediate feedback is more relevant than owning three forms. The page does not say that its AI score is the same as an official human-reviewed result, so we do not make that claim.

The Academic Prep Course is the structured option. The page advertises eight content modules, over 30 hours of focused instruction and practice tests embedded in the course. It is self-paced.

People often mix these categories. A form is a diagnostic opportunity. Feedback helps locate a weakness. A course supplies instruction and a sequence. None guarantees the performance that appears on test day.

Practice feedback is not an admission score

The main iTEP Academic page describes Academic Plus as a 90-minute exam taken in one sitting across reading, listening, grammar, writing and speaking. It says the test is available online and on demand, remotely or on site, and is aligned with the CEFR.

The same page says tests are normally graded and completed within 24 hours. A technical problem or suspicion of cheating can make that longer. Test IDs are valid for 12 months and nonrefundable; completed results are valid for two years.

The iTEP scoring page explains another difference. Official scoring uses a mixture of iTEP software and English-speaking ESL professional graders, with graders calibrated every 60 days. It also provides a verification portal that asks for government identification and another identifier.

That verification path is what practice feedback lacks. An institution can authenticate an official result. It cannot turn an instant unofficial preview into the required evidence just because the numbers look promising.

Even an official result is not a universal pass. iTEP tells institutions to take a multifaceted approach when setting admissions scores. The Council of Europe CEFR global scale describes broad ability levels, but it does not set your university's cutoff. Before booking, ask the receiving institution three exact questions:

Do you accept iTEP Academic Plus for this programme and intake?
What overall score and component scores do you require?
How must the result be sent or verified?

The existence of iTEP recognition in a country or institution is not enough. The lowest-cost sensible sequence

A sensible sequence buys information only when the previous step cannot provide it.

Step 2: use the free Preview Test. Learn the interface and note where time, task wording or response production breaks down. Treat the displayed result as unofficial because that is how iTEP labels it.

Step 3: train the weak skill. If speaking is the bottleneck, do not buy repeated reading questions. Use targeted speaking repetitions. If the weakness is test navigation, another form may be more useful than a general course.

Step 4: buy the smallest diagnostic that answers the unresolved question. One $15 Basic form gives another practice exposure. The $30 Practice Plus adds immediate AI feedback on productive skills. The $45 course adds a teaching sequence and more practice.

Step 5: book the official exam only after checking acceptance and readiness. The official product page showed $141 total when we read it, and purchases are nonrefundable. One avoidable attempt costs more than every practice option discussed here.

This sequence is about decision quality, not being cheap. A $45 course is inexpensive if it prevents a poorly timed $141 exam. It is wasted money if the real issue is that your university does not accept the test.

Prepare the skill, not only the interface

The official Academic exam includes speaking and writing. A practice interface can show you when a timer starts, but knowing the timer exists does not create an answer.

Speaking improves through retrieval under pressure: hearing a prompt, selecting an idea, producing connected speech, noticing a weakness and trying again. That is why scripted dialogues do not make you fluent. Recognition is not retrieval.

For a practical routine, combine speaking practice at home, practice when you are alone, and practice with ChatGPT voice. Those articles were written around IELTS, but the training principles apply to any timed spoken response: answer directly, extend with a reason or example, listen back, repair one repeated fault, then answer a new prompt.

What we could not verify

We did not purchase or take any of these products. We therefore did not independently compare their questions, score reports, difficulty or technical experience.

We did not test whether the AI score from Practice Plus predicts the score produced by the official combination of software and professional graders. The product page says the summary is aligned with iTEP results; it does not publish a prediction error or an equivalence guarantee on the page we read.

We could not determine from the free page how much of the official Academic Plus format the Preview Test reproduces. Calling it a preview is not enough evidence to claim full format coverage.

Prices, bundles and fees can change. The figures here are the amounts visible on 21 August 2026, not a promise about the checkout price on a later date or in every location.

We also did not verify acceptance at any particular university. Acceptance belongs to the receiving institution, and the required product and score can differ by programme.

We first measured search phrases using the full entity name, International Test of English Proficiency, and the product name, iTEP Academic Plus. We discarded an older dataset because the acronym iTEP was contaminated by searches for India's Integrated Teacher Education Programme. That discarded set was not used to choose this article.

We opened the iTEP home page in the existing browser profile, listed its links, and followed those links to the free tests, Academic, scoring and product pages. We did not infer product URLs from a pattern. We recorded each product's wording, price, number of forms, scoring claim and refund statement from the page itself.
