IDP vs British Council: how booking works in Vietnam

In Vietnam, IELTS is offered through two official organisations: IDP and the British Council. This confuses a lot of first-time candidates, so let's make it simple.

The test is identical either way. IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge University Press & Assessment — you can read about the partnership on ielts.org. A 7.0 from an IDP centre and a 7.0 from a British Council centre are exactly the same score to every university and immigration authority.

So how do you choose? On practical grounds:

• Location. Check which organisation runs a venue closest to you. Both operate in the major cities; coverage elsewhere varies by organisation.
• Date and format availability. For a specific paper date — say, 21 August for General Training — one provider's centre may have seats when the other is full. Check both calendars.

• Extras. Both providers bundle official preparation materials with a booking. Compare what's included when you register.
