Companies Using Versant for Recruitment and Training 2026

Pearson confirms Versant use at iQor, Smart Axiata, Kuraray, Nikkei and PERSOL, but each company uses scores for a different HR decision.

Pearson confirms that iQor, Smart Axiata, Kuraray, Nikkei and PERSOL use Versant, but not for one identical purpose. Some use it in recruitment, some in employee benchmarking, and some to measure whether language training is producing practical communication gains.

That distinction matters more than a list of logos. A candidate should identify the company, role and exact Versant product before preparing. Start a free SpeakShark conversation only when spontaneous speech is part of the assigned assessment.

Key takeaways

  • iQor is connected with remote recruitment assessment through a Pearson testimonial.
  • Smart Axiata confirms Versant use across recruitment, training and development.
  • Kuraray uses Versant to verify speaking even when employees already have TOEIC evidence.
  • Nikkei uses Versant with new recruits and an internal Global Talent Program.
  • PERSOL uses Speaking and Writing results to set role benchmarks and evaluate development.
  • None of these sources publishes one cutoff or retake rule for every role.

In this guide: comparison | iQor | Smart Axiata | Kuraray | Nikkei | PERSOL | invitation | failure | practice | research | FAQ

Confirmed Versant use by company

Organisation Country or operating context Pearson-confirmed purpose What Pearson does not publish
iQor Global BPO and customer service Remote recruitment assessment Universal product, cutoff or retake rule
Smart Axiata Cambodia Recruitment, training and development Requirement for every vacancy
Kuraray Japan Verification of practical speaking Companywide hiring threshold
Nikkei Japan New-recruit assessment and employee development Public pass score for each role
PERSOL Japan and Asia Pacific Role benchmarking and training ROI Universal hiring rule

Pearson also quotes Cognizant BPS on using Versant to standardise recruitment at scale. SpeakShark already has a dedicated TCS and Cognizant communication assessment guide, so this page does not create another Cognizant owner URL.

The shared vendor does not create a shared employment policy. Versant offers speaking and listening, writing, placement, professional and four-skill products. An employer can select one product, combine it with another assessment or change the process by campaign.

iQor recruitment at scale

Pearson quotes iQor Senior Recruitment Manager Rinna Dizon describing Versant as useful for assessing English communication with remote candidates. The statement emphasises secure administration and fast online access to results.

That supports a narrow conclusion: iQor has used Versant in recruitment. It does not tell an applicant which test will appear in a particular country, whether the score is visible, or what result advances one client account.

An iQor candidate should copy five fields from the invitation: test title, measured skills, deadline, equipment and support contact. A headset-based speaking test needs a different practice plan from a writing or four-skill test. Our Versant setup checklist covers the technical layer, while Versant question types explains why old product guides can conflict.

Smart Axiata four-skill standard

Pearson quotes Smart Axiata Senior Competence Development Specialist Samol Lyeng saying the company has relied on Versant for years in recruitment, training and development. The statement specifically values assessment across all four language skills and the creation of a clear English standard.

This is broader than a hiring screen. A result may establish a baseline before training or measure employee improvement later. It would therefore be wrong to treat every Smart Axiata test as a pass-or-fail job gate.

Candidates and employees should ask what decision the result supports. Recruitment, course placement and development review are different processes. A lower baseline used to assign training is not necessarily a rejection. An invitation or HR instruction should make the purpose explicit.

Kuraray: why TOEIC was not enough

Pearson's corporate material says Kuraray uses Versant to verify speaking proficiency, including for people with high TOEIC scores. This is one of the clearest examples of receptive and productive evidence being separated.

TOEIC Listening and Reading can demonstrate how well a person understands workplace English without showing how they formulate an immediate spoken response. Versant adds direct evidence of oral production. That does not make either test better in every situation. It means Kuraray wanted evidence that the existing score did not provide.

Employees facing both should keep the preparation tracks separate. Use official TOEIC work for listening and reading. Use timed oral responses for speaking. The TOEIC Speaking overview, Versant speaking and listening comparison and intelligibility guide explain the boundaries.

Nikkei recruitment and global talent

Pearson's Nikkei case study says the media company needed a better measure of practical communication for employees and new recruits. It adopted an automated spoken-English test and uses results inside an annual Global Talent Program.

The published outcome belongs to a training case study. Pearson reports improvement after training and describes how HR and employees use scores to identify communicative capability. It does not publish a universal applicant cutoff.

This distinction changes candidate behaviour. Do not chase a number taken from an employee-development chart. Prepare for the assigned task and wait for the recruiter to state whether the result is screening, benchmarking or one input among several.

PERSOL benchmarks, not a public pass mark

PERSOL's case study concerns long-term employee development. Pearson says PERSOL selected Versant Speaking and Writing to measure workplace communication, set benchmarks for certain roles and evaluate training return on investment.

The case study includes target scores for the programme. They are useful evidence that role-specific benchmarks exist, but they are not permission to advertise one PERSOL hiring cutoff. The wording “certain job roles” is the limit.

An employee should ask which role profile applies, whether the test is diagnostic or consequential, and when the next review occurs. If Writing is included, general conversation is only part of the preparation. Business email organisation, grammar and tone require separate practice.

What the invitation must confirm

Before practising, verify:

  1. The exact Pearson product name.
  2. Speaking, listening, writing and reading modules included.
  3. Completion deadline and permitted device.
  4. Camera, secure-browser and headset requirements.
  5. Whether the candidate receives a score report.
  6. Whether a technical incident can be rescheduled.
  7. Which employer decision uses the result.

Do not purchase a public practice test and assume it creates an official attempt. Employer-assigned testing is normally controlled through the organisation's workflow.

Open the employer's current careers page beside the assessment invitation. A vacancy can disappear, move country or change client account while an old preparation page remains searchable. The iQor careers site is one example of the employer layer that must be checked separately from Pearson. Pearson explains the assessment; the employer controls whether the role is open and how the result enters selection.

Useful supporting pages include what a good Versant score means, the current score report, GSE and CEFR comparison, score validity, retake ownership, Writing format, Professional English format and Placement Test format.

What an unsuccessful result can mean

An unsuccessful recruitment assessment may stop that campaign. A development assessment may instead trigger training or delay eligibility for an assignment. Silence from a recruiter is not proof of either outcome.

Separate three records:

Event Evidence to keep Correct response
Low confirmed result Score report or recruiter notice Ask about the next eligible attempt
Technical failure Test ID, time, screenshot and support case Report promptly through the invitation route
No update Submission confirmation Wait for the stated window, then contact once

The possible cost is another recruitment or development cycle. Do not invent a permanent ban or salary loss when the company has not published one.

For a speaking product, record short answers, repeats, retells and opinions under time pressure. Review response start, pauses, word endings and whether the answer stays relevant. Use free daily conversation to expose hesitation, not to imitate protected prompts.

For Writing, add typing, dictation, reconstruction and business-email practice. For four skills, distribute time according to the weakest measured component. The call-centre speaking guide, phone English, job interview role plays, speaking anxiety guide and pronunciation practice cover transferable communication.

How we researched

We checked Pearson's Versant HR pages and customer stories on September 28, 2026. We used company statements only for the purpose they name and did not convert programme targets into universal hiring cutoffs.

We are a speaking improvement tool. We are not an exam preparation provider and are not affiliated with Pearson, iQor, Smart Axiata, Kuraray, Nikkei, PERSOL or any exam board. For test format, booking and official practice material, go to the exam body or responsible organisation directly. Use SpeakShark to make your spoken English stronger, and use official material to learn the test.

FAQ

Which companies are confirmed to use Versant?
Pearson publishes first-party statements or case studies connecting Versant with iQor, Smart Axiata, Kuraray, Nikkei and PERSOL. Cognizant BPS is also quoted on Pearson's workforce page. This proves a real organisational use case, but it does not mean every vacancy, location or employee receives the same Versant product.
Do all of these companies use Versant for hiring?
No. iQor and Smart Axiata are connected explicitly with recruitment, while Nikkei combines recruitment with employee development. Pearson describes PERSOL primarily as a benchmarking and long-term development case. Kuraray uses Versant to verify practical speaking, including where TOEIC scores already exist. The purpose must be checked company by company.
What Versant score do these companies require?
There is no defensible universal cutoff. Pearson's PERSOL case study reports role-development targets, but those figures are not companywide hiring thresholds and cannot be transferred to iQor, Nikkei, Kuraray or Smart Axiata. Candidates should use only the score stated in their current invitation or employer policy.
Can a high TOEIC score replace Versant?
Not automatically. Pearson's Kuraray statement specifically explains that Versant is used to verify speaking ability even for people with high TOEIC scores. TOEIC Listening and Reading and a spoken Versant product measure different evidence. Only the employer can decide whether one result replaces, supplements or has no relationship to the other.
What happens if a candidate fails a company Versant assessment?
The current recruitment or development decision may stop or be delayed, but no public Pearson case study creates a universal retake period or permanent ban. Save the invitation, ask whether a retake is available and distinguish a low language result from a technical incident. Another company or role may apply a different standard.
Can SpeakShark issue a Versant score?
No. SpeakShark provides general conversation and pronunciation feedback. It cannot issue a Pearson result, reproduce protected assessment questions or guarantee hiring, promotion or overseas assignment. Use Pearson's official material to understand the assigned product and use conversation practice only for additional spontaneous speaking repetitions.
