Australia Skilled Migration English Speaking Practice Guide
Understand Australia's post-August 2025 competent, proficient, and superior English speaking scores, accepted secure tests, task practice, and migration checks.
For tests taken on or after August 7, 2025, Australia changed approved English tests and score tables. IELTS Speaking remains 6 for competent, 7 for proficient, and 8 for superior English, but PTE Academic and several newer accepted tests use new component thresholds.
This guide covers speaking practice, not visa eligibility or points advice. The exact visa subclass controls the required level and evidence.

Key takeaways
- Approved tests and scores changed on August 7, 2025.
- Older valid results can use older tables depending on visa and timeframe.
- IELTS thresholds are component scores, not overall averages.
- The newer PTE Academic score table differs from the old table.
- TOEFL applicants must select Taking TOEFL for Australia from January 21, 2026.
- Fully online at-home tests are not accepted.
- Practice apps cannot provide Australian visa evidence.
Why the test date matters
Home Affairs publishes separate tables:
- Tests taken on or after August 7, 2025.
- Tests taken on or before August 6, 2025.
Older results may remain usable until August 6, 2028, depending on the visa and validity rules. The same test name can have different score thresholds across the two tables. PTE Academic is the clearest example: competent Speaking moved from the old 50 threshold to 54 on the new table, while other components changed differently.
Record:
- Exact test date.
- Test product and version.
- Four component scores.
- Required English level.
- Visa subclass.
- Validity period.
- Whether a retake result is eligible.
Competent, proficient, and superior are not interchangeable
These labels can affect eligibility or points differently. First identify the visa and target.
Competent English
For current IELTS, each component must be at least 6. For current PTE Academic, the minimums are Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51, and Speaking 54.
Proficient English
For current IELTS, each component must be at least 7. Current PTE Academic requires Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69, and Speaking 76.
Superior English
For current IELTS, each component must be at least 8. Current PTE Academic requires Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85, and Speaking 88.
One high component does not replace another below the required row.
Choose the correct test and pathway
For tests after August 7, 2025, Home Affairs lists secure-centre versions of C1 Advanced, CELPIP General, IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training, LANGUAGECERT Academic, MET, OET, PTE Academic, and TOEFL iBT.
Important boundaries:
- Check the visa subclass page, not only the general English page.
- IELTS OSR and MET SSR are only for eligible visas.
- TOEFL candidates must select Taking TOEFL for Australia when required.
- At-home or remote-proctored versions are excluded.
- Professional regulators and skills-assessing authorities may impose separate rules.
Use IELTS UKVI versus Academic versus General, PTE speaking apps, and OET speaking apps for test-specific practice, not visa interpretation.
What speaking practice should build
Across accepted tests, strengthen:
- Immediate intelligibility.
- Natural pace and phrasing.
- Accurate response to the actual task.
- Connected explanation and supported opinion.
- Description of image, event, process, or professional scenario where relevant.
- Register appropriate to the listener.
- Recovery after a small error.
- Stable performance under official time limits.
Do not mix task formats. IELTS uses a human interview, PTE Academic uses recorded computer tasks, CELPIP uses its own computer prompts, and OET speaking is profession-specific role-play.
Practice by selected test
IELTS
Practise Parts 1, 2, and 3 with a human-style examiner. Use IELTS speaking practice at home, practice alone, and Band 7 mistakes.
PTE Academic
Use the current PTE Academic format, not PTE Core. Practise microphone timing, pronunciation, oral fluency, content, and the current task set from Pearson.
OET
Healthcare candidates should practise professional role-play and separately verify regulator and visa requirements. Use OET role-play cards and OET tutor versus AI.
CELPIP and other tests
Use official provider samples for task format and scoring. The Home Affairs conversion table does not teach the test.
Four-week speaking plan
Week 1
Confirm visa, required English level, accepted test, date table, and four component targets. Run a baseline.
Week 2
Practise the weakest speaking task under official time and recording conditions.
Week 3
Combine pronunciation and fluency correction with complete unfamiliar responses.
Week 4
Run full official-format mocks, verify equipment, and stop adding generic memorised templates.
Use daily speaking drills, real-time correction apps, English accent apps, and confidence-building methods.
Migration evidence checklist
- Visa subclass and stream verified.
- Required English level verified.
- Secure-centre test selected.
- Test date mapped to the correct table.
- Four component thresholds recorded.
- Test validity confirmed.
- OSR or SSR eligibility checked on the visa page.
- TOEFL Australia pathway selected where required.
- Skills assessment and regulator rules checked separately.
- At-home tests excluded.
Never upload visa application numbers, score reports, passports, or skills-assessment files to a speaking app.
Start a free Australian-English conversation, practise a complete response, and repeat with a different teacher voice.
Final practice checklist

- Pronunciation remains intelligible across accents.
- Full component profile is considered.
- Official provider material used for final mocks.
- Visa and professional rules remain separate.
- Sensitive data stayed private.
Run one final free speaking session before an official mock.
