AITSL English Requirements for Teachers in Australia (2026)

If you are applying for an AITSL teacher migration skills assessment, there are two English evidence routes: a qualifying four-year study option or an accepted Academic IELTS Test Report Form. AITSL does not treat every English test, English-medium degree or teacher registration as an interchangeable substitute.

This guide separates the decisions that applicants often mix together: which route you can use, which IELTS format counts, what changed in 2026 and what AITSL does not decide. The authority for an individual application remains AITSL's current English proficiency page and the checklist for your nominated occupation.

The decision in one table

The table is not an eligibility decision. AITSL also assesses qualifications for the nominated occupation. Meeting the English criterion alone does not produce a positive skills assessment.

Route one: four years of qualifying study

AITSL's study option is narrower than "I studied in English." It requires four full years of eligible higher education in Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States. The study must include a recognised initial teacher education qualification. The current AITSL English proficiency page says all parts of that initial teacher education, including supervised teaching practice, must have been completed in one or more of those six countries.

For individual qualifications to count towards the study option, AITSL describes a minimum one-year full-time study duration and a level comparable to an Australian bachelor's degree or higher. Credit transfer, recognition of prior learning and advanced standing may change the amount of study AITSL counts. A doctorate completed in one of the six countries can count for no more than two full-time years towards this English route.

Example: An applicant has a two-year degree from one listed country and a teaching qualification from another. The question is not whether both certificates are in English. It is whether the combination supplies four eligible full-time years and whether the initial teacher education and supervised practice meet AITSL's location conditions. Build a timeline of each qualification and check it against the occupation checklist before paying.

AITSL asks applicants to submit evidence for one English route. It also reserves the right to request Academic IELTS if uncertainty remains about an applicant's English proficiency. The study route should therefore be documented precisely rather than inferred from nationality or language of instruction.

Route two: Academic IELTS

AITSL accepts paper-based and computer-delivered Academic IELTS taken at an IELTS test centre. It accepts IELTS One Skill Retake. It does not accept IELTS Online, IELTS Indicator, PTE, TOEFL or Cambridge for this criterion. These are the current statements on AITSL's English language page, not a claim about what every Australian teacher regulator accepts.

For school teacher occupations, AITSL checklists show minimum Academic IELTS section scores of 7.0 in Reading, 7.0 in Writing, 8.0 in Speaking and 8.0 in Listening. Check the current checklist for your exact nominated occupation rather than copying a score from another applicant or from a state registration website. The checklist, acceptable evidence and assessment route are the operative combination.

There is an important 2026 update: on 13 July 2026, AITSL announced that the validity period for Academic IELTS results used in its skills assessment increased from two to three years, effective immediately. Some older PDFs and snippets still show a 24-month rule. Do not rely on an old checklist's validity line without reconciling it with AITSL's newer notice.

Example: Your result was issued 28 months ago. An older checklist might appear to rule it out. The July 2026 notice says three years, but you should still verify the current portal instructions, nominated occupation and report details before paying the application fee. The changed validity window does not relax the required section scores.

The cost of choosing the wrong route

AITSL's fees page lists an AUD 1,198 skills assessment application fee, effective 7 September 2026. An appeal is AUD 938 and a Skilled Employment Statement is AUD 265. Those are separate AITSL fees; the IELTS test itself has its own charge.

The same page says a partial refund of AUD 982 may be considered only while assessment has not begun. Once an application is under assessment, AITSL says no refund is issued. This is why the sensible order is: verify the occupation, confirm your English route, assemble evidence, then submit and pay. Do not buy a PTE test for AITSL merely because a different Australian pathway accepts it.

Migration assessment is not a licence to teach

AITSL's application FAQs distinguish a migration skills assessment from state or territory teacher registration. You can seek an AITSL assessment without already holding registration, but you need the relevant regulator's registration to work as a teacher. A regulator may have separate English standards or documentary routes.

Keep two columns in your plan:

1. Migration: Does your visa route require an AITSL assessment for this nominated occupation? Check the Department of Home Affairs and AITSL.
2. Employment: What does the state or territory registration authority require before you can teach there?

Combining these into a single "English requirement for Australian teachers" checklist is an easy way to pay for the wrong test or miss a second application.

A practical pre-application checklist

1. Identify the nominated teacher occupation and download its latest AITSL checklist.
2. Choose the study or Academic IELTS route; do not mix incomplete evidence from both and assume it will pass.
3. For study, map each qualification's country, level, full-time duration and supervised teaching practice.
4. For IELTS, verify the test-centre format, each section score, Test Report Form and the three-year notice.
5. Check AITSL's current fee and refund terms before submitting.
6. Separately check the registration authority where you intend to teach.
7. Keep dated copies of the official pages you relied on.
